Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to do anything when I move out of a rented home?
Leave your home spotless and, particularly if you were renting, leave it in the condition you found it. You should have arranged with the landlord to have the property inspected, so you can claim back your full deposit. It’s always a good idea when moving into rented accommodation, to take date-stamped photographs of anything which is not in perfect condition – that way, you minimize any dispute when it comes time to refund you.
What’s the last few things needed?
You will be exhausted from the move, so consider getting assistance with cleaning the home you’re leaving.
Book this person in advance, and make sure you have electricity/water for them to operate optimally. Provide them with all the cleaning materials, and remove all the debris from the premises when you leave. Ensure you lock up securely at the end of the process.
What should I do on moving day?
Make sure you have somebody at your ‘old’ home and somebody at your new one – they need to direct the movers as to which rooms, or even where in the rooms, big furniture items need to go. If you’re very organized, draw out a plan of the rooms and where specific items of furniture should go (particularly anything heavy or cumbersome).
What last minute things are needed the night before moving?
If you haven’t cleaned out your fridge and/or freezer, do it now. You don’t want it leaking water. Ask a kind friend to store any remaining frozen goods, and put cold goods into cold boxes.
Make a snack box for the day – you’ll need the sustenance. That includes cold drinks/tea/coffee.
Pack an essentials/tool box – basic items, including light bulbs, toilet paper, screwdriver, torch, etc.
If you have pets, you’ll need to keep them out of the way. Work out how to do that well in advance, either putting them in a day kennel, with relatives/friends, or fenced off at one of the properties.
What questions should I ask the removal company?
This will depend on whether you choose a full service, which includes that they pack up your goods and transport them, and whether you use their boxes and packaging materials, or your own. There are many different options here, depending on your budget. Most importantly, check that they’re insured for your goods in transit.
What steps should I take when moving house?
You need to ensure you are no longer responsible for the electricity and water at the property you’re leaving, and that the electricity and water is connected at your new home. You’ll need to visit the municipality to arrange any disconnections or connections, and make sure they happen timeously.
If there is a security company involved in your new road or your property, sign up with them from the start.
Arrange to hand over keys, and to take possession of your new ones, including any remote controls.
Any hints and tips about packing?
If you are doing your own packing, make sure every box is very clearly marked – it’s smart to use different colours for different rooms, so the removal company knows in which room to put those boxes.
Even if you’re just moving down the road, make sure you pack precious breakables with bubble wrap and newspaper, and mark them clearly as fragile.
Any advice leading up to my move?
If you’re doing your own packing, start gathering newspapers and boxes well in advance.
It’s a good time to rid yourself of things you don’t need – donate to charity, and/or have a garage sale.
How do I plan for the big move into my new home?
Choose a reputable removal company, and make sure your goods are fully insured in transit. Cheaper is seldom better. Keep communicating with the seller, so you can time your move strategically – that is, when they’ve moved out completely and have cleaned the property.
How to decide when to move?
Your occupation date will have been specified in your Offer to Purchase, and both buyer and seller will be working towards that. You will most likely have chosen the date that the property is likely to be transferred into your name, or a date thereafter.
If cost is a factor, the removal companies charge less for moves in the middle, rather than beginning or end of month – it’s a less popular time.
